Provision of specialist services
CEDARS-SEN Support offers free to subsidised specialist services on speech, language, and audiology, and assessment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Speech and language therapists and audiologists help provide students with hands-on training sessions, skills and recommendations to adapt to university life. This provision significantly shortens the waiting time for students in need, as they may have to wait for weeks and queue for the same services in the community.
Fairness and Timely Support on Campus
The university’s Equal Opportunity Unit is a dedicated facility that develops, implements, and promotes a set of university guidelines, policies, procedures, and educational materials on equal opportunities. The aim is to eliminate discrimination on campus. An efficient complaint handling and inquiry mechanism are set in place to ensure students know that timely support is readily available. These elements form a strong support system and encourage discourse on equal opportunities for students with SEN.
Employability Empowerment
The Career Kickstart Series caters to the specific needs of students with SEN by offering a mix of career workshops, recruitment and networking events, and individual coaching sessions. CEDARS-Careers and Placement partners with professionals who are experienced in supporting individuals with special employment needs. Career workshops and networking events held by these professionals equip students with SEN with essential career knowledge, industry insights, and practical skills for CV writing, job applications, interviews, personal branding, and workplace adjustment.
Students receive personalised guidance through individual coaching sessions, which help them identify their strengths, define career goals, and come up with effective job search strategies and action plans for a successful transition into the workplace.
Ex-participants expressed their satisfaction with CEDARS-Careers and Placement with these events. They found the events informative and beneficial in offering valuable insights on crucial career topics, such as CV preparation, personal branding, and employer expectations. The one-on-one coaching sessions were highly rated and recommended for their personalized attention, which encouraged meaningful discussions on self-discovery and career paths. The coaches’ supportive and positive approach helped participants feel more confident about their career prospects.
