INCLUSIVE EDUCATION FUND

The Silver Jubilee of HKU’s Class of 81 in 2006 not only celebrated a significant milestone but also upheld the values of social inclusion through the establishment of the Henry Chan Inclusive Education Fund. Generously funded by Mr. Henry Chan, this initiative aimed to support students with disabilities or from ethnic minority backgrounds. The contribution enabled HKU to broaden its services for students with disabilities and Special Educational Needs (SEN).

In 2019, Mr. Henry Chan made another donation to set up the K.B. Chen Inclusive Education Fund, envisioning a sustainable source of support for future generations of students. This fund primarily focuses on providing personalized financial assistance to students in need and has been instrumental in doing so since its inception in 2006.

CEDARS administers the allocation of these donation funds to help students with SEN be equipped with the necessary tools and services. Students with SEN can apply for the fund under the following schemes:

K.B. Chen Inclusive Education Award for Students with Disabilities/SEN

Recognises outstanding performance of students in academic excellence and/or active participation in extra curriculum activities

K.B. Chen and Henry Chan Inclusive Education Grant for Students with Disabilities/SEN (open for application throughout the year)

Provides individualized support tailored to the specific needs arising from disabilities, such as specialized equipment or services related to SEN, medical interventions, and transport arrangements.

K.B. Chen Inclusive Education Enrichment Subsidies (open for application throughout the year)

Encourages students to participate in overseas learning opportunities by supporting them through financial assistance.

VOICES OF STUDENTS

I am very grateful and pleased that the university could give me this education funding to support my academics. Even with a disability, I can now act and perform as a normal student who is studying at the University of Hong Kong. I will use the funding to buy some electronic devices and academic books related to my major so that I can perform better in my examinations in my year 4 of study at HKU.

There are many obstacles in life that block one’s path. For me, one of the major obstacles is the financial distress I face due to being an SEN student. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies without the need to find a part-time job, which in itself is already a big support in my pursuit of goals in life. I hope I can achieve the goals I’ve set for myself and become someone who will positively contribute to society.
