Nathan Fok has had trouble reading and writing letters since a very young age.

An HKU postgraduate alumni, Nathan was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability while he was in school. Throughout his academic journey, Nathan faced challenges due to his dyslexia, particularly in Chinese reading and writing. As a result, he grew up in an English curriculum.

After years of learning, relearning and acceptance, Nathan is now a passionate proponent of inclusive education and has shared his journey as a student with dyslexia. He has highlighted the importance of creating an accommodating and encouraging learning environment for students with SEN, which he found at CEDARS-SEN Support.

Reflecting on his experience, Nathan vividly recalls a significant moment during his final exams. It was Christmas, and his land law teacher at HKU took the time to check in with him during the exam. She asked about his understanding of the test questions and whether he had enough time to complete them.

“It is a very small gesture, but it goes a long way. It made me feel that I didn’t have to hide my condition or that it was a disadvantage,” Nathan said.

“I felt my dyslexia was something that was accepted, and it wasn’t a barrier to keep me from achieving what I wanted to achieve or attain in life.”

During that time, Nathan also had a case manager at CEDARS-SEN Support who provided him with useful tools such as visual aids and text-to-audio applications. These tools continue to assist him today, as he finds that audio-based learning enhances his understanding of knowledge.

With his personal experience in mind, Nathan believes there are two essential aspects to improve the education of students with SEN.

Firstly, raising awareness among teachers, students, and the broader campus community is crucial. Only by understanding the needs of students, an accommodating and encouraging learning environment can be established. This awareness can help teachers better support students with SEN and ensure that their unique requirements are met.

Secondly, Nathan reiterates that it’s vital for students with SEN to know that they are accepted in this environment. Rather than considering their condition as a hindrance, they should view it as something that can facilitate their growth. This internalisation comes with time.

“Our disability is not holding us back. I sincerely hope that students will take the opportunity to encourage teachers about their efforts, which will increase awareness among other teachers, students, and the people on campus about the needs of students with SEN.”

“It is a great cause!” Nathan exclaimed.

Nathan hopes that all members of the HKU community can do their part to contribute to a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.
